Applications open for 'Shark Tank' event

FARMINGTON — The High Desert Discovery District and Four Corners Innovations, Inc. are accepting applications for business participants during the HD3 Discovery Day events on May 9 and 10 in Farmington.

The business acceleration event gives start-up companies the opportunity to present their ideas to a panel of experienced entrepreneurs in a setting similar to the business reality TV show, Shark Tank, according to a press release. The deadline to apply is March 23, and as many as 15 businesses will be selected to present.

Discovery Days aim to “offer innovators and entrepreneurs the opportunity to vet and discuss their innovation or opportunity, their challenges, strategy and market promise in front of a highly experienced group of business achievers and investors,” according to the press release.

HD3 has hosted 16 similar events throughout the state since 2010, and this Discovery Day will focus on “innovation, commercialization and entrepreneurial opportunities in New Mexico (and) the Four Corners region,” the press release states.

Local businesses recognized by state SBDC

FARMINGTON – Two Four Corners businesses were recognized by the New Mexico Small Business Development Center Network in Santa Fe on Feb. 9.

Tom Gibbons of San Juan Closet Works in Bloomfield and Kevin King and Russell Gordy of San Juan Compression in Farmington were recognized as “star clients” of the small business development network at an annual reception that “recognizes businesses and entrepreneurs from across New Mexico who are seeing tremendous growth in their business,” according to a press release.

Gibbons is a custom closet and storage specialist whose business got its start in 2011 at the Farmington Small Business Development Center at San Juan College, according to a press release.

King and Gordy manufacture and sell vapor recovery units and wellhead compressor units to companies throughout New Mexico and in Argentina and Mexico, according to a press release. The pair started the business in 1995, according to a press release.

Nominations open for Small Business Week awards

FARMINGTON – The U.S. Small Business Administration’s New Mexico District Office is accepting nominations for small businesses to be recognized during SBA National Small Business Week.
There are 11 awards for small businesses and business champions, according to a press release. The New Mexico District Office will give awards to family-, minority-, veteran- and women-owned businesses, as well as young entrepreneurs and home-based businesses, among others awards.

The deadline to nominate a business in Feb. 28.

Nominators must submit a nomination form and background information forms, as well as a photo of the nominee. Business owners who have used SBA services or resources are eligible for the awards.

State oil/gas leases raise $2M more

The State Land Office announced another successful round of oil and gas lease sales, collecting more than $2 million from February’s oil and gas lease sales and bringing in $93.6 million so far in Fiscal Year 2018.
“The oil and gas industry’s investment in New Mexico is an investment in New Mexico’s schoolchildren,” State Land Commissioner Aubrey Dunn said Feb. 20. “Oil and gas activity on State Trust Lands generates 92 percent of revenues earned by the State Land Office.  Anyone who thinks there is more viable way to fund education is naïve.”
The news lease sales and their sent $1,413,950 to public schools and Miner’s Colfax Medical Center received $727,789.
The state offered 12 tracts covering 2,131 acres of State Trust Lands in Lea, Roosevelt, and San Juan 
Counties, the office said in a press release Feb. 20.  The call drew 25 bidders from eight states “and was held online in a sealed bidding format.  Sealed bids generated $2,141,738 for an average per acre price of $1,005,” the release said. “Conquest Land Company LLC, of Oklahoma City, OK, was the winning bidder, paying $414,360 for 120 acres in Lea County for an average per acre price of $3,453.”
The lease sale revenue goes into the Land Maintenance Fund, which covers the self-funded State Land Office’s operating expenses.  The rest goes to the beneficiaries to supplement their operating budgets except public school cash, which is sent into the state’s General Fund and distributed via legislative appropriations.

Farmington facility recognized by national program
FARMINGTON – Life Care Center of Farmington was named a 2017-18 U.S. News and World Report Best Nursing Home.

The Farmington nursing and rehab facility was one of three facilities in New Mexico to receive the recognition, according to a press release. Less than 15 percent of nursing homes throughout the U.S. receive the rating each year.

The Farmington Life Care Center has also earned the highest rank by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, according to the press release.

The center, located at 1101 W. Murray Dr., is managed by Life Care Centers of America.

Regional care facility earns leadership award

FARMINGTON – Visiting Angels of Southwest Colorado-Farmington received the Best of Home Care – Leadership in Excellence Award from Home Care Pulse, according to a press release from Visiting Angels.

Home Care Pulse is “the leading firm in quality assurance for home care,” and the award is its highest recognition, the release states. The recognition means that Visiting Angels is among the top 5 percent of care providers participating in the organization’s satisfaction management program, in which 10 percent of clients and caregivers provided feedback over the course of a year.

Visiting Angels was founded in 2011 and serves clients, particularly veterans and seniors, in the Four Corners and the San Luis Valley.

WESST releases online business directory

FARMINGTON – WESST recently launched an online directory tool for its clients to share key information and to engage with others in the WESST community.

The client directory lists business contacts, locations, hours, phone numbers and websites, as well as a short description. Businesses can be searched by name, category or region, according to the directory.

"Every day, you are presented with several chances to support small businesses in the communities where you live and work. When you have this opportunity, such as finding a pet sitter, yoga studio, or place to pick up a great holiday gift, we hope you will consider a WESST small business client," WESST President Agnes Noonan said in an email announcing the directory.  "Not only will you support the local economy by purchasing from a business in your area, you will also support the livelihoods of these entrepreneurs' families and dreams."

The directory will be updated on a regular basis. WESST clients must register to be listed in the directory.
