FARMINGTON – The city has another place where shoppers can track down brand-name footwear, apparel, and sports and outdoors equipment.

Earlier this month, Hibbett Sports Inc. opened a new store in the Animas Valley Mall. The national athletic retailer, based in Birmingham, Ala., has 12 other stores in New Mexico, according to a company press release.

The local store will employ about eight full- and part-time workers, according to the release.

It is the second sporting goods store to open recently in the area, underscoring the popularity of sports and outdoors activities in the Four Corners. In November, the largest national sporting goods retailer, Dick's, opened its 646th box store a seven-minute walk up the street.

Store manager Trish Mexican works at Hibbett Sports on Friday at the Animas Valley Mall.

Hibbett Sports officials say the company prides itself on its employees' customer service and providing customers with information they can't always get at other sporting goods stores, according to the release.

Jeff Gray, Hibbett Sports' vice president of real estate, said the company's strategy involves rapid expansion into markets.

"Hibbett is a fast-growing operator of over 1,000 full-line sporting goods stores in small to mid-sized markets, predominantly in the Southeast, Mid-Atlantic and Midwest," Gray said in a press release. "This strategy has proved to be a successful one for Hibbett as the company continues to expand its number of stores across the U.S."

The company was founded in 1945 when Rufus Hibbett opened the first store in Florence, Ala., selling sporting goods and marine and aviation equipment. Originally called Dixie Supply Company Inc., the company changed its name to Hibbett Sports in 1960 and began focusing exclusively on sporting goods, according to the company website.
