FARMINGTON – A new Dick's Sporting Goods store — the fourth in New Mexico and 646th nationwide — will open its doors here Friday.

The largest sporting goods retailer in the U.S. will celebrate the store's opening with a weekend-long grand opening celebration that will offer promotional items and giveaways, if shoppers get there early.

Starting at 8 a.m. Friday and Saturday, and at 9 a.m. Sunday, the new store will offer shoppers prizes like free moisture-repellent exercise shirts and gift cards ranging in value from $5 to $500.

There also will be the chance to meet a former professional football player. On Saturday from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., former Denver Broncos wide receiver Rod Smith will make an in-store appearance.

Lauren Hobart, Dick's executive vice president, said in an Oct. 27 press release that the sports retailer will offer equipment and apparel, and supply the needs of outdoors enthusiasts ranging from hunters and anglers to athletes and golfers in the Four Corners area.

“Dick’s Sporting Goods is excited to become a member of the Farmington community with the opening of our newest location,” Hobart said in the release. “We look forward to serving the athletes and outdoor enthusiasts in Farmington and inspiring them to achieve their personal best.”

The 45,000-square-foot, standalone storefront occupies the primary spot in the city's newest shopping center, the Farmington Pavilion, at 5050 E. Main St. near Walmart and Target. Dick's also has two locations in Albuquerque and one in Las Cruces.

The Pittsburgh-based box store specializes in clothes, shoes, and sports equipment and gear for team sports, exercise, camping, hunting and fishing.

A new free-standing sign at the shopping center lists Dick's and a Chick-fil-A restaurant. The Georgia-based fast-food restaurant is expected to break ground on its location next year, according to Developer Josh Skarsgard, whose Albuquerque firm is in charge of the Farmington Pavilion project.
