Churches aim to inspire men during conferences

FARMINGTON — Two local churches will host events in the next few weeks that will aim to inspire and encourage men.

The first event will be the Man-to-Man rally on Jan. 29 and 30 at the Dineh Christian Center in Shiprock. The rally will include a talk by weatherman Steve Stucker. A Sunday service will follow the talk. Stucker will also speak at the service, and music will be provided by evangelist Kenny Williamson from Dawsonville, Ga.

This is the first time the Dineh Christian Center has hosted a men's rally. Pastor Freddy Hall said it's a project of the center's reorganized men's ministry, which is taking a new direction. The event is open to men of all faiths.

Stucker will speak about issues like fatherhood, as well as how to be good fathers, sons and citizens. Hall said Stucker will share his story and encourage men to "be responsible and get their lives together."

Hall said the goal of the rally is to help families on the Navajo Nation build better relationships.

"We want to connect men with men," he said.

Another men's event will come to Farmington next weekend. Cross Roads Community Church will host a live screening of the No Regrets Men's Conference on Feb. 4.

Residents may be familiar with the event from when it was streamed live at Kirtland Baptist Church. As the conference grew in popularity, local organizers moved it to a larger venue.

More than 100 men attended last year's rally, said Shawn Lyle, the church's event coordinator. This year, he hopes to double that number

"It gives a chance just for men to be with other men and talk to them and be in prayer about different matters," Lyle said of the conference's goal.

The theme for this year's conference, which will be streamed from a church in Wisconsin, is "Take Root." The theme is based on a Bible verse from the second chapter of Colossians, which states, "Just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live in him rooted and built up, strengthened in the faith and overflowing with thankfulness."
