FARMINGTON — A Shiprock High School senior recently won a contest to create a new logo for the Central Consolidated School District.

Malachi Lee’s logo incorporates New Mexico’s Zia symbol, the Shiprock pinnacle, the U.S. Department of Education’s blue ring, an eagle and a report card. He drew the design with colored pencils, according to a press release from CCSD.

"My art teacher told me to keep it really simple," he said in the release. "I am really good about putting detail into my work, but decided to keep it as simple as it is."

The logo was selected through a series of surveys last fall on the district’s website.

The competition was open to all students. CCSD students submitted 61 logos, including 31 from Sandra Garnanez’s art class at Shiprock High School. Students from Kirtland Central and Career Prep high school also submitted entries.

The CCSD board approved the new logo at its Dec. 20 meeting at Newcomb Elementary School.
