FARMINGTON — San Juan College students in the adult education program recently distributed 2,400 dictionaries to third-grade students in San Juan County.

The effort was part of a national "Look It Up" project by the Bayless Charitable Fund, which donated the dictionaries to the San Juan College Foundation.

The college students presented dictionaries to third-grade students at McCormick Elementary School during a special assembly Thursday.

Jennifer Martinez-Maestas, a testing specialist for the adult education program, said in a press release.that the dictionaries can inspire the students to become active readers.

"Our students see this project as their way of giving back to the community that supports them through their educational journey," she said. "The students who receive the dictionaries are excited to learn. Hopefully, this dictionary keeps that excitement to learn alive."

Since 2003, more than 32,000 dictionaries have been donated to San Juan County students.
