FARMINGTON — Seven Farmington teachers have been named final nominees for the 2017 Golden Apple Award for Excellence in Teaching.

More than 100 high school teachers from New Mexico were nominated for the award by students, parents, administrators and community members, according to a press release from the Golden Apple Foundation of New Mexico.

The educators were nominated for their "exceptional ability to inspire students to learn, think and create," the release states.

The local nominees include Justin Calder, Kris Hughes, Dawn Mankiewicz and Danille Young, from Piedra Vista High School, and Stephanie Jaquez, Erin McGinley and Regina Atencio, from Farmington High School.

The nominees may apply for the Golden Apple Award for Excellence in Teaching. The award includes a $1,500 cash stipend, a $4,000 professional development fund and membership in the Golden Apple Academy of Fellows, according to the press release.

Seven educators in the state will receive the award.
