FARMINGTON — San Juan Regional Medical Center has been awarded a 2016 Governor’s Environmental Excellence Award.

The hospital earned a second-place finish in the "resources stewardship" category, which recognizes projects that "reduce hazardous and solid waste, manage sustainable materials and demonstrate energy conservation," according to a press release from the medical center.

The hospital was honored for its Green Team, which was created in 2007 to reduce the hospital’s carbon footprint

Last year, the Green Team recycled 414,061 pounds of materials, including 157,025 pounds of shredded paper, 7,732 pounds of e-waste, 52,084 pounds of compostable waste and 167,710 pounds of cardboard, according to the press release.

Through the program, the hospital also reprocessed 4,874 pounds of medical instruments for a savings of nearly $195,000.
