FARMINGTON — A fifth-grade student at Farmington's McKinley Elementary School competed in both the state spelling bee and the state geography bee earlier this year.

Rhys Triplett competed in the New Mexico National Geographic Society’s Geographic Bee on April 1 at the National Dance Institute in Albuquerque. He was eliminated in the preliminary round.

School bees took place at schools throughout New Mexico for students in fourth through eighth grades. Each school's champion could then complete an online test to qualify for the state competition.

Triplett won McKinley Elementary's geography bee and qualified for the state bee by passing the online test.

Rhys also won his school's spelling bee and advanced to the Farmington Municipal School District spelling bee. By winning the district competition, he qualified for the state spelling bee. He was eliminated in the ninth round of the state spelling bee.

The final round of 2016 National Geographic Bee Championship will air on the National Geographic channel and Nat Geo WILD on May 27 and later on public television stations.
