Local law enforcement officers, including deputies with the San Juan County Sheriff's Office, and Kmart employees teamed up earlier this month for the annual Shop With Your Cops event.

More than 50 officers and civilian staff from the sheriff’s office, Farmington Police Department, Bloomfield Police Department, New Mexico State Police and New Mexico Department of Game and Fish, as well as all of the cadets from the San Juan County Criminal Justice Training Authority, participated in the program on Dec. 12 at Kmart on East Main Street in Farmington.

This year, 96 children were served breakfast, and then each child was partnered with a volunteer to shop for items they need, as well as for toys.

The Shop With Your Cops program was designed to teach children that officers can be trusted and are there to help. It also allows officers to give back to the community in a positive way.
