Want to age well? Research on lifelong vitality for older adults has repeatedly emphasized four areas: keeping the mind active, healthy lifestyle habits, social interactions and volunteering or sharing with others. With that research in mind, the Encore program at San Juan College has emphasized learning, wellness, relationships and service since 2002. Encore offers an opportunity to learn more about its program and offerings with its 13th Annual Birthday Party on Aug. 5.

"Encore offers classes and much more, designed for students ages 50 and older, and the birthday party is an excellent opportunity to learn about this vibrant program," said director Liesl Dees. "Our goal is to create opportunities for seniors to maintain lifelong vitality through self-development and service."

The birthday party offers fun, food and prize drawings. This year’s patriotic theme offers attendees an opportunity to wear their red, white and blue for an afternoon of camaraderie. The event will take place from 3 to 5 p.m. in the Henderson Fine Arts Center 9000 rooms at San Juan College.

To emphasize learning, Encore instructors will be available to discuss their fall classes, which range from exercise and computers to art and field trips. Those signing up for membership can also register for fall classes at the birthday party, including "History of Aviation," "iMovie," "Writing Our Lives," "Digital Photography," "Woodcarving Workshop" and "Listening Beyond the Music: Appreciating the San Juan Symphony."

To emphasize wellness, choose from a wide variety of fitness classes such as "Water Works" or "Yoga" or classes designed for life wellness, such as "Music Therapy for Longevity" or "Minding Your Body." New exercise classes this fall include an "Encore Ballet," "Fitness and Strength," "Intermediate Pickleball" and "Resistance Training: Introduction to the Weight Room." If you are ready for an adventure, consider "Backpacking Basics," "Mountain Biking Basics" or "Mountain Biking: What’s Next."

Relationships are abundant at the birthday party, with social opportunities to visit with old friends and interact with other attendees. Learn more details about classes by talking to instructors and attendees can visit over food.

For anyone looking for service opportunities, volunteers are welcome and attendees can learn more about the Encore Ambassadors, who volunteer throughout the year. To volunteer at the birthday party, contact Encore at 566-3293. One class in the fall schedule, "Random Acts of Kindness," also presents an opportunity for service through personal actions.

All Encore classes are designed for adults 50 and older but are open to all students 18 and older. For more information on fall Encore classes, visit or call San Juan College’s Community Learning Center at 505-566-3214.
