Santa Claus makes stops in San Juan County

FARMINGTON — Every year, children anxiously await visits from Santa Claus and look forward to sitting on his lap to tell him what they want for Christmas.

They strain their necks to see Santa ride into Farmington at the end of the Christmas parade. They gather in the pool in Bloomfield, and they stand in lines at the Farmington Recreation Center during Jingle Bell Jamboree to tell him what they hope to receive for Christmas.

Scarlett Jim, 4, cheered “Santa! Santa!” as she saw him during the Christmas parade in Farmington last week. She said she plans to ask Santa for a jack-in-the-box for Christmas.

When children ask Santa for presents, it is not uncommon for them to give him letters or cookies.

“One of the coolest things, a kid gave me a golf ball because he said I worked so hard I needed to go golfing,” said Michael Farley, who embodied Santa Claus on Thursday as he prepared for his appearance at Miracle on Main Street at the Farmington Civic Center on Sunday.

He still carries that golf ball with him as he attends events at churches and community centers to gather Christmas requests from children in the Farmington area.

The children have various requests for Santa Claus, including cellphones, tablets, LEGOs and dolls. Occasionally, children ask Santa to help someone who is sick feel better. In those instances, he tells the children to pray and that he will do what he can.

This year, Santa will ride to the Farmington Civic Center in a horse-drawn coach, something new for him.

“Usually, I come in unannounced,” he said, adding that he often sneaks in through a door or goes down the chimney.
