FARMINGTON – For many years, the Farmington Public Library has joined in celebrations of El dia de los ninos/El dia de los libros (Children’s Day/Book Day), an annual event founded by Santa Fe author Pat Mora 20 years ago.

On her website, Mora describes the event as the culmination of a year-long commitment to linking children and families to books, promoting what she calls “the importance of bookjoy in their daily lives.”

In the past, the Farmington library has celebrated El dia de los ninos/El dia de los libros with a tailgate party. But Youth Services Coordinator Flo Trujillo said the celebration will take a different form this year, with an umbrella party planned for the green space outside the library on Thursday, April 28.

“We’ll have about 25 umbrellas, possibly 30, and we’ll have staff reading books, and volunteers reading books, under each one,” she said, adding that the event also will feature a performance by a ventriloquist.

“It’s like a reading festival,” she said. “I’m calling it a reading fiesta.”

Each of the umbrellas will feature its own theme, Trujillo said, with those themes corresponding with the book being read. She said there also will be lots of surprises, and she emphasized the event is not limited to small children.

“It’s for all ages,” she said. “It’s not just for preschoolers.”

Trujillo hopes the event leads participants to make reading an important part of their life over the next several months.

“Our goal is to get a library card in everyone’s hand and register everyone for summer reading,” she said.

New Mexico mystery author Pari Noskin Taichert will be at the Farmington Public Library Friday, April 29 for a reading and book signing.

The library also will present a reading and book signing by New Mexico mystery author Pari Noskin Taichert, a two-time Agatha Award finalist, on Friday, April 29. Taichert is the author of a series of name-related novels set in New Mexico such as “The Clovis Incident,” “The Belen Hitch” and “The Socorro Blast.”

“She’s very entertaining, very charming, and she’s been with us before,” said Kathleen Browning, the library’s adult services coordinator, adding that library officials have tried to talk Taichert into writing a novel set in Farmington.

Browning said many of Taichert’s novels also have a UFO component to them.

“She’s currently at work on another novel, but she hasn’t revealed what it is,” Browning said.

Taichert also will take part in the library’s Make.Do Fair scheduled for the afternoon of April 29.
