FARMINGTON — An 8-year-old girl is in critical condition after being shot in the neck by a rifle.

Detective Lt. Kyle Lincoln of the San Juan County Sheriff's Office said deputies and Farmington police officers were dispatched at about 5:15 p.m. Friday after receiving reports that a child with a gunshot wound had been brought to Urgent Care, 4820 E. Main St.

The child was subsequently transported by paramedics from Urgent Care, which is not equipped to handle trauma victims, to the San Juan Regional Medical Center.

Lincoln said the girl's father told detectives the girl was helping him and his 6-year-old daughter clean the family's home on County Road 3451 in Flora Vista on Friday afternoon. The 6-year-old sister picked up a rifle in the room and pulled the trigger, Lincoln said, striking the 8-year-old girl once in the neck.

Lincoln said detectives are investigating the incident and have not yet determined whether charges will be brought against the father.

He said the family is cooperating with the investigation.
