Handy D. Stanley, 90, of Laurel, Delaware departed this life Saturday, June 18, 2022. He was known to most as “Junior” or “Delmer”. Born September 13, 1931, in San Domingo, Maryland, he was the son of the late Ida Virginia Stanley (Shockley) and Handy William Stanley. Handy was a devoted dad, pop-pop, and great-grandpop as he was affectionately called. Handy was known for his wisdom, kind and unique personality, and passion for history. He was a very proud veteran of the Korean War. The U.S. Army recognized him for his honorable service with a Purple Heart, Combat Infantryman Badge, and Korean Service Medal with one Bronze Service Star. Handy was truly a miracle of survival after being wounded many times. He was an honorary lifetime member of Sharptown-Columbia American Legion Post #269. After retiring from the army as an honorary disabled veteran, Handy returned home and married Betty L. Price. From this union are four daughters, Linda, Ida, Annette, and Jeanette. Handy is survived by three daughters, Linda Lee of Laurel, Delaware, Annette Stanley of Laurel, Delaware and Jeanette Stanley Smith and her husband Anthony of Delmar, Maryland, one sister, Odessa Robinson of Wilmington, Delaware; three grandchildren, Greg Hitch, Jr. and his wife, Ja’Net of Hebron, Maryland, Michael Fooks, Jr. of Millsboro, Delaware and Jasmine Smith Horsey and her husband, Brandon of Delmar, Delaware; son in-law, Greg Hitch, Sr.; eight great grandchildren; and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. He was preceded in death by his loving wife Betty Stanley; five sisters, Sarah Allen, Sophia Smullen, Grace Jacobs, Mary and Ruth Stanley; five brothers, Cowell, Lannie, Orville, Louis, and William Stanley; one daughter, Ida Hitch; and one granddaughter, Genea Fooks. Celebration of Life Service will be held Saturday, July 2,2022 at 11:00 a.m. Bennie Smith Funeral Home 437 N. Front Street, Seaford, DE 19973.
