FARMINGTON – Farmington’s defense swarmed, double-teamed and kept its targets well in sight on numerous occasions — pushing 5A power Belen to overtime.

But that momentum could only continue for so long entering the extra period, and the Scorpions lost a 35-28 OT heartbreaker tonight at Hutchison Stadium.

"It's pretty emotional, man. It just comes down to who's got it more," Scorpions cornerback Jacob Brown said. "We played well. We fought hard."

The Eagles capitalized on their first OT possession, scoring on a 1-yard quarterback sneak.

The Scorpions had a good shot to keep the night alive, but it lasted just a few short plays.

Getting closer and closer to the red zone, quarterback Isaiah Jaramillo dumped the ball for a quick out-route, but Belen strong safety Adrian Miller picked it off to end the game.

"I got it front of it, and (the receiver) went back out. Then I just intercepted it," Miller said. "It was a good game. Everybody just kept fighting. Farmington gave us a good fight."

It was a difficult outcome for Farmington to leave the building with, given all the bright moments the defense had.

The Scorpions seized control in the opening minutes with big stops on the outer wings. Defenders smothered Belen in man coverage, and they had numerous sequences where two or three worked together to make extra tackles.

"We did good tackling. We played great defense," Brown said.

The offense struggled to get things rolling, and the defense could only do so much to neutralize Belen’s ground game.

Farmington had a couple too many missed passes and a couple bad snaps, including one at the Belen 4 at the tail end of the third quarter.

But the Scorpions kept pushing and moving the chains, eventually tying the game at 28-28 to force overtime.

"It was great. I like the thriller. It was a good game," Brown said.

The Scorpions (1-2) will host Durango at 7 p.m. Sept. 15, while Belen (3-0) will play 7 p.m. Sept. 14 at Rio Grande.
