FARMINGTON — A 9-year-old boy was shot and killed by a 7-year-old boy Friday at a residence in Arboles, Colorado, during an incident to which the San Juan County Sheriff's Office initially responded.

The Archuleta County Sheriff's Office and members of the Southern Ute Police Department and paramedics were dispatched around 2:58 p.m. Friday to a residence in Arboles on reports of a juvenile shot, according to Undersheriff Tonya Hamilton of the Archuleta County Sheriff's Office.

During the course of the investigation, it was determined three juvenile boys — ages 7, 9 and 10 years old — had forced entry into an unoccupied summer home.

In the home, Hamilton said the juveniles gained entry into a locked cabinet with two firearms.

One of the firearms held by the 7-year-old was loaded and was discharged, striking the 9-year-old.

The other two juveniles ran back to a residence and told an older sibling about the incident, according to Hamilton.

The 9-year-old later was pronounced dead at the scene.

No charges have been filed in the case, Hamilton said.

Members of the San Juan County Sheriff's Office were dispatched on reports of the shooting taking place in northeast San Juan County. They left the scene once Colorado law enforcement arrived.

Hamilton said people who call 911 around Arboles sometimes get routed to dispatch in San Juan County or in La Plata County, Colorado, due to cell service repeaters and towers.

She added the routing of calls occurs like that because those dispatch centers are closer to the caller.
