Robert Mathieu killed Friday in Albuquerque


FARMINGTON — A priest who formerly served at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Bloomfield and St. Rose of Lima in Blanco died Friday in a car crash in Albuquerque, according to a press release from the Diocese of Gallup.

According to the press release, Father Robert "Bob" Mathieu, 70, was driving Friday in Albuquerque when his car was struck by another vehicle.

Mathieu left Bloomfield and Blanco in 2015. He had served as a priest in the Diocese of Gallup for 42 years. His most recent assignment was at Our Lady of the Snow Catholic Church in Snowflake, Arizona.

In addition to serving at various Catholic parishes, Mathieu was involved in prison ministry, as well as the Diocesan Cursillo program. The Cursillo program is part of a movement that started in 1940s in Spain and involves a three-day weekend course.

A vigil and rosary for Mathieu will start at 5 p.m. Monday at Our Lady of the Snow Catholic Church, 1655 S. Main St. in Snowflake. The funeral mass will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the church followed by burial at the Snowflake cemetery.

His family has asked that donations be made in lieu of flowers to the Diocese of Gallup, 503 W. Highway 66, Suite B. in Gallup or P.O. Box 1338, Gallup, NM 87301.
