Employee's mistake led to more than 5,000 people erroneously being billed



FARMINGTON — More than 5,000 Aztec and Bloomfield residents wrongly received bills from their trash service provider this month, according to Steve McCaffrey, the WCA Waste Corporation district manager.

Both Aztec and Bloomfield contract with WCA for trash services. The price of trash service is included in residents' city utility bills, but some residents received a bill from the trash company in the mail this month.

When reached by phone today, McCaffrey said an employee accidentally pushed the wrong button on a computer program, leading to the bills being generated and mailed to the customers.

McCaffrey said the company acknowledged the error. He said the customers who received the bills should disregard them.

"It was really an unfortunate situation," he said.

He said a total of 5,500 bills were sent to Bloomfield and Aztec residents.

When the company learned of the error, it sent letters to the 5,500 customers and called some of the customers.

The cities of Aztec and Bloomfield also were informed of the error. Both cities posted a notice on their Facebook page.

Aztec utility director Delain George said nothing has changed with the city's billing process. Residents will continue to receive their trash bills as part of the city's utility bill.

"Anyone who did pay, we're really sorry, and we will refund their money," McCaffrey said.
