FARMINGTON — Farmington police are looking for a suspect in connection to a shooting on Sunday morning.

A 31-year-old man was shot after confronting a man who had allegedly broken into a garage shortly after midnight on Monarch Street, according to a press release from the Farmington Police Department.

Police are looking for a Native American or Hispanic man who is between 5 feet 7 inches and 5 feet 9 inches with a husky build, according to the press release. The man was wearing a black hat and white plaid jacket with a joker or clown design. He was also wearing dark pants and may have been wearing glasses, the press release states.

After hearing the garage door open, the 31-year-old man went into the garage and confronted the intruder, according to the press release. When the suspect allegedly ran off, the man followed him to a nearby walking trail.

The suspect then allegedly shot the man in the wrist and both legs, according to the press release.

The man was transported to San Juan Regional Medical Center and has since been released.

Farmington police spokeswoman Georgette Allen said if people notice someone breaking into their house, garage or car, they should immediately contact police and provide as detailed of a description as possible, including the direction the suspect fled if the suspect left the scene.

"We absolutely don’t want anybody to get hurt," Allen said.

In the incident on Sunday morning, Allen said the suspect entered the garage using a garage door opener he had obtained from a vehicle outside. She said police urge residents to lock their vehicles and remove any valuable items from their cars. She said police also encourage people not to keep spare house keys or garage door openers in their cars.

Anyone who may have information about the suspect in the shooting is asked to contact police. Allen said people can leave tips through San Juan County Crime Stoppers by calling 505-334-8477, and they can message the Farmington Police Department on Facebook.
