Piedra Vista's season came to an end Friday night in Roswell.
The No. 15-ranked Lady Panthers (14-15) struggled against the best offensive rebounding team in the state, falling to No. 2 Roswell 60-37 in the Round of 16 in the 4A girls' basketball state tournament.
"Roswell is a pretty good basketball team. They probably out-shot us 6-to-1 because they hammered us on the boards," said PV assistant coach Joe Reed. "We had the scouting report from a few coaches in Roswell's district, and they said Roswell was the best offensive rebounding team they have ever seen. After playing them, I can honestly say that was true."
PV was in foul trouble quickly with star center Kaleigh Graham picking up two personals in the opening three minutes and 15 seconds of the game.
Graham picked up a third quickly in the second quarter, keeping her out of much of the first half.
Roswell built a 21-13 halftime lead and stretched it to 43-22 after three quarters.
"We did a good job hanging in the game, but the third quarter has been our problem all year," Reed said. "Roswell came out and put it on us in the third."
Senior Kelseigh Simpson led Piedra Vista with 12 points. Claudia Charles has 11 and Graham finished with nine points and 10 rebounds.
"Our girls never quit. They got down by as much as 30 but fought to get it to within 20, but then it went from there," Reed said.
PV head coach Mike Christie was unable to make the trip to Roswell. His mother, Virginia Sue Denney Christie, passed away Wednesday and her funeral service is scheduled for today in Kirtland.
The Lady Panthers lose only two seniors this year, Simpson and Coah Charley, leaving the future very bright for PV girls' basketball, Reed said.
"We have a good JV team and we will have a freshman and sophomore who can really help us next year. We have just about every one coming back," Reed said. "The girls will be ready to step up and they will be ready for next year."
Roswell will face No. 7 Gallup at The Pit on Tuesday.
