Shiprock Chieftain #42 Patdric Toehe (42) shoos a 3-pointer over Thoreau s Isaiah King and Nathaniel Woodie.
Shiprock is on cruise control in District 1-3A.
The Chieftains blew past Thoreau 81-33 on Saturday night in the Chieftain Pit.
“Everybody was on tonight,” said Shiprock head coach Chester H. Atcitty Jr. “We just did a good job. Thoreau wasn’t happy. They thought we were running up the score when we didn’t back off the press, but we have things we need to work on, too.”
Kevin Aspaas was one of four Chieftains to score in double figures with a game-high 20 points.
Dominique Todacheenie added 16 points for Shiprock, while Patdric Toehe notched 12 and Hiram Gleason added 11.
Shiprock (19-5, 4-0 District 1-3A) was without one of its top scorers as Justin Begay sat out the game with a high ankle sprain.
“It was a great time for them to step up with Justin out,” Atcitty said of Aspaas’ and Todacheenie’s scoring.
The Chieftains will now prepare for a road game at Bloomfield on Thursday.
Shiprock has already won three times against the Bobcats this season.
“We can’t take them lightly,” Atcitty said. “We have to stay focused. I don’t think were looking ahead. We just have to take it one game at a time.”
Bloomfield is coming into the game against the Chieftains on a high note after winning in Wingate on Saturday night.
The Bobcats (9-15, 3-1) fought back from an eight-point first-quarter deficit to defeat the Bears 54-46.

“They had a tough crowd,” said Bloomfield head coach Devon Manning. “We played really well until the last four minutes and just kind of held on from there.”
Michael Crockett scored 19 points, and Ryan Johnson added 16 for the Bobcats in the victory.
“It’s a really big win for us and will be confidence boost for our kids, but our schedule has prepared us for games like this — playing PV and Farmington and Shiprock. We’ve played a tough schedule and the kids know how to handle these situations,” Manning said.
The Bobcats know they’ll have their hands full with the tough Chieftain squad coming up next.
“Shiprock has pounded us the last three times,” Manning said. “We’ll see how we do with them at our place.”
