The Chieftains fell 22-18 to the Wildcats on Saturday afternoon.
"Hopefully, we won't have another five-hour bus ride this year," said Shiprock head coach Don Story. "We left at 6:45 a.m., and that ride was tough on the players. We had a slow start to both halves, and I think that was due to the long ride. The defense played great all game, but offensively, we just couldn't sustain anything."
Both teams put three touchdowns on the board, but the Chieftains (3-3) were unable to convert any of their point after attempts.
After 1A Questa (5-1) took an 8-0 lead, defensive end Andre Shorty recovered a fumble and returned it for a Shiprock score. The Chieftains went for the tie but the two-point try was stopped short of the goal line.
Shiprock took a 12-8 lead on a 25-yard touchdown run by Wesley Martin, but the ensuing extra point attempt was missed.
The Chieftain defense scored their second touchdown of the game when they recovered a fumble in the end zone to push their advantage to 18-8. Again, the two-point try was stuffed at the goal line.
The Wildcats took control in the second half with a pair of scores to regain the lead 22-18.
Shiprock had one final chance to win the game, but the team's final drive stalled at the Questa 25-yard line after three consecutive penalties.
The Chieftains hit the road again next week when they will play Escalante on Friday night in Tierra Amarilla.
