Ray Bedoni Yazzie Sr.

May 15, 1934 - July 6, 2008

Ray B. Yazzie Sr., 74, of Upper Fruitland, was called to his Heavenly home Sunday, July 6, 2008, at San Juan Regional Medical Center in Farmington. Ray was born May 15, 1934, in Burnham, to the late Bedoni and Alice Yazzie of Burnham.

Ray is survived by his wife of 50 years, Katie, of Upper Fruitland; and their children, Nelson and wife, Virginia Yazzie, Esther and husband, Larry Howard, Edith and husband, David Howard, all of Upper Fruitland, Maurina and husband, Allan Poyer, of Durango, Colo., Evelyn and husband, Ernie James, Victoria and husband, Gary Lee, Ray Yazzie Jr., Sharon and husband, Travis Lee, all of Upper Fruitland; and granddaughter, Kimberly Yazzie, of Durango; 18 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; sister, Rose Hoskie of Tiis Tsoh Sikaad; brothers, Harold B. Yazzie and wife, Mabel, of Oak Springs, Ariz., and Joe B. Yazzie and wife, Norma, of Kirtland. He will be remembered by numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and many other friends and relatives.

Ray was preceded in death by his parents, Bedoni and Alice Yazzie; brothers, Archie, Thomas, Peter, Harry J. and Henry; and baby sister, Alice Yazzie; grandsons, Nathan Yazzie and Aaron Anderson James.

Ray was employed with Farmington Lumber from the early 1950s to late 1990s, and Navajo Housing Authority, PNM Stern Rogers.

He was self-taught in carpentry and masonry and eventually became a remarkably skilled freelance carpenter. As an apostle of God, he built several churches and historical buildings in the Farmington area and reservation. He was a longtime resident of Fruitland and Burnham (Tiis Tsoh Si Kaad) and pastored the Burnham Full Gospel Church for many years and was a supporter of several local churches and their congregations.

The Yazzie Family would like to give special recognition to God Almighty for the 75 years of life he gave to our father, brother, grandfather, uncle, nephew and friend, Dr. Robert Burns, Dr. Samuel Carpenter, Horizon Home Health Care, Links II, SJRMC ICU Medical Staff (4th Floor), Dr. William Hall, Dr. Bill Reisterer, Michael Barthelamy, Lola Brown, State Representative Tom and Beverly Taylor, and The family of the late Merrill and Clinton Taylor.

Friends and family may call and visit the family from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. today, Thursday, July 10, at Brewer, Lee & Larkin Funeral Home, 103 E. Ute St., in Farmington.

A celebration of Ray's life will be at 10 a.m. Friday, July 11, at The Oasis Church, 1601 N. Dustin Ave., in Farmington, with Evangelist Mike Lee officiating. Ray will be laid to rest at Greenlawn Cemetery.

Pallbearers are James Yazzie, Marcelino Yazzie, Christopher Yazzie, Melvin Keeswood, Brando Howard, Wilfred Yazzie, Willie Hoskie and Derrick Chase.

Honorary pallbearers are his wife, Katie, their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, sister, Rose Hoskie, brothers, Harold and Joe Yazzie and MaryLou Yazzie, Isabel Yazzie and Alice Yazzie.
