While watching the news one evening, Arnold Orquiz was taken back to hear how many children in the state of New Mexico go hungry each and every day.

"I turned to my wife Barbara and said, 'we need to do something about this,' Orquiz said.

Orquiz, owner of Amigo's Mexican Food Inc. in Deming, decided to call the Roadrunner Food Bank of New Mexico to offer a huge donation of diced Green Chile.

On Monday, April 10, Roadrunner dropped off 14 pallets at Orquiz's place of business. On Wednesday, a Roadrunner truck driver picked up two pallets of the diced green Chile which held 100 cases each.

When the donation is finished, Orquiz will have donated a total of 900 cases to be distributed across the state of New Mexico.

"I saw the chance to help the people in the whole state," Orquiz said. "I was born in New Mexico and I feel humbled for this chance to give back."

The Roadrunner Food Bank was started 30 years ago by Reverend Titus Scholl. At that time, Scholl distributed food to hungry people out of the trunk of a car.

Every year, 26 million pounds of food is distributed throughout the states' different partner agencies and to regional food banks within the state.

Some of the food partners served are shelters, soup kitchens, group homes, regional food banks and low-income senior housing sites.

"We are fortunate enough through our business to be able to supply some of these food needs," Orquiz said. "I think businesses that can, should give back to their communities."

The Orquiz family has been in business 40 years. The company makes and sells 400,000 pounds of Chile products each year. The company services Sprouts and Shamrocks stores throughout Arizona, Colorado, Texas and New Mexico. They also supply Kroger's and Smith's stores in Arizona.

The Orquiz's have been married 37 years. Arnold is 81 years old and still runs three miles each and every day, starting before the sun rises.
