Mardi Gras will have special meaning to the community of Deming when the Cancer Support of Deming and Luna County Inc. hosts its third annual "I Hope You can Dance" fundraiser on Feb. 9.

The event has traditionally become the kick-off event for the city and county's fundraising efforts in support of cancer patients, their families and friends in Deming and Luna County.

"This event is always so much fun and it serves to help so many people of our community," Cancer Support board member Betty Hyatt said.

Cancer support has played a vital role in drawing attention to the needs of local patients and by raising cancer awareness in the communities in and around Luna County. One of the chief support alleys of the group is the transportation of patients to and from doctor's appointments, treatments and hospital visits outside of Deming. They also extend vouchers for cancer screenings and are equipped with an extensive reference library locally.

This years theme will be a New Orleans Mardi Gras. The ball will be sporting colorful beads and Mardi Gras masks that will give off that "Fat Tuesday" atmosphere.

The ball begins at 5:30 p.m., on Saturday, Feb. 9, at the Deming Special Events Center, 2300 E. Pine St.

Tickets will be $40 per person, with a beef brisket dinner catered by Palma's Italian Grill along with entertainment supplied by The Illusion Band of Silver City.
