SILVER CITY — The sweet smell of breads, pastries and pies for Thanksgiving hangs at the perfect height to tempt every visitor to the recently opened La Bonita Bakery.
Sandra Calderon and her husband Troy Miller opened their La Bonita bakery in Silver City in September. The couple, who share the baking duties, specialize in Mexican pastries.
Inside, the space is decorated in warm colors to match the sweet air escaping the ovens. Lining the cases in front are empenadas and jelly rolls, pig-shaped marranitos and seasonal biscochos.
The couple moved to Silver City from Las Cruces to open their shop. La Bonita is a new, third wing of an association which began with Lujan Bakery and Leo's Bakery in Las Cruces.
This new bakery has no connection with El Rincon Restaurant which used to occupy the space.
Since opening, things have run pretty smoothly for La Bonita.
"Business has been steady," Calderon said, "Especially since we haven't advertised."
Their location doesn't hurt. The bakery is just across the street from Silver High School, from which some of their business comes in the form of students after school lets out.
The bakery offers a traditional, Mexican sampling of baked goods and even offers a special of menudo and posole on weekends. The pastries are dense and delicious.
La Bonita is accepting orders for pies, rolls, and other baked goods for Thanksgiving. They aren't the only local businesses helping patrons plan for the holiday, though. Below
