SILVER CITY — A Santa Clara man has been arrested and charge with aggravated battery after allegedly stabbing another man nine times in a fight last weekend.
Angel Rivera, 33, is being held at the Grant County Detention Center on $25,000 cash-only bond after being arrested on Nov. 10.
According to the affidavit for arrest, Rivera told police he was with his girlfriend and her niece at the niece's house on the 400 block of Agave Street and the two started arguing and he left. After he left, Rivera said the victim, another man who had been at the house earlier, returned and the two started arguing, because the victim's girlfriend allegedly told the victim that Rivera had "threw her down."
Rivera told police he told the victim he did not want to fight because he, Rivera, had a knife but the victim allegedly punched Rivera and that's when he pulled out the knife. He said he thought he stabbed the victim two or three times, and that during the fight, someone else, he wasn't sure who, began kicking him.
A witness told police that Rivera told the victim to back up or he would "shank" him. The witness said the victim stepped up to Rivera and the two started fighting, and Rivera got out his knife, opened it, and stabbed the victim several times.
Another witness told police that Rivera turned to him and said "I thought you had my back," and that witness said, no "because of what he did to his family," and that witness kicked Rivera in the groin three times. He told
Rivera told police he stabbed the victim in self-defense.
The victim was transported to Gila Regional Medical Center with nine stab wounds. He was later flown to El Paso for further treatment. His condition is unknown.
