School board chairman Arthur Romero said he received Thomas Garcia's resignation letter late Monday.
Garcia had been selected for the school district's top post less than 2 1/2 years ago.
The Las Vegas Optic (http://bit.ly/Q23c92) says Garcia's resignation follows an overwhelming no-confidence vote against him from school employees.
The newspaper says there also was a protracted and nasty battle with many of the district's parents and students over the suspension of the popular music teacher and dwindling support from the Mora community.
Garcia is a New Mexico legislator whose term in the state House runs through the end of this year. He tried to switch to the state Senate, but lost in the Democratic primary.
