The 25-year-old man died after suffering multiple gunshot wounds.
An individual involved in the shooting was admitted and treated Friday morning at the Northern Navajo Medical Center, according to Jenny Notah, spokeswoman for the Navajo Area Indian Health Services. The hospital is located on U.S. Highway 491 in Shiprock.
After the individual was admitted, the hospital received a threatening phone call relating to the shooting, Notah said. The nature of the phone call could not be disclosed, she said.
The hospital immediately went into lockdown at about 9 a.m. The lockdown lasted through Friday evening.
This weekend, the hospital will restrict access to employees, patients and visitors. The hospital will only allow entry through the main doors at the front of the hospital. Parking will only be allowed in the east parking lot, hospital security officials said.
"This is the first time we've been on lockdown," said David John, president of the hospital, who was not on the grounds at the time of the incident. He has been at the hospital for eight years.
The individual involved in the shooting was released from the hospital Friday into the custody of Navajo Nation Department of Public Safety.
The department is working with the FBI to investigate the shooting Friday and the events that followed.
FBI spokesman Frank Fisher could not confirm if the person admitted to the hospital Friday morning was a suspect in the shooting.
The FBI also could not disclose the identity of the man who died Friday.
Though he suffered several gunshot wounds, the man's official cause of death will not be determined until autopsy results are released.
No other details are being released at this time.
Hospital officials stressed Friday that the facility is secure and that extra security precautions have been taken. Staff are trained regularly in safety drills, Notah said.
About 870 employees are staffed at the Northern Navajo Medical Center, and it has about 65 hospital beds, John said.
