"The first bull I had I'd seen a bunch of times," said Joseph McConnel, who won the 2012 National High School Finals Rodeo bull riding event. "I started fine, but then I lost my hand on him. That's just how it goes sometimes. It just wasn't my night tonight."

Brady Sims from Holt, Mo., was able to make two qualifying rides, scoring an 85 and an 84.

The event will continue with the second day of competition today beginning at 7:30 p.m.
