Eden told reporters Friday that two officers unloaded three shots each after a 38-year-old James Boyd made threatening moves and refused to drop his knives. Eden says police first used bean-bags and stun guns to try to disarm the man.
Boyd, who police say had a lengthy criminal record, later died. However, Eden says the medical examiner has not yet determined if the bullets killed Boyd.
According to a video of the shooting obtained by the Albuquerque Journal, half a dozen officers appeared to be standing about 20 feet away from the man and shouting "Get on the ground!" when an initial burst of gun fire rang out.
