Churches across Connecticut joined with St. Rose of Lima church in Newtown this morning, ringing their bells 26 times to remember the children and educators killed a year ago at Sandy Hook Elementary School.
The 9:30 a.m. remembrance began at the same time a gunman began his attack on the school last year on Dec. 14, 2012.
The town is not holding any formal memorials in an effort to maintain a quiet and private atmosphere. News media were asked to respect the town's wish for privacy and keep their distance.
The White House held a brief memorial in Washington D.C., with President Barack Obama and his family lighting 26 votive candles on a table set up in the White House Map Room.
