FARMINGTON, N.M.—A new regional pet shelter is opening in Farmington, with almost twice the space as the old one.

The Daily Times ( http://bit.ly/1bkiiRM) reports that nearly 100 dogs and cats were moved to the new facility on Thursday. It opens Friday.

State and San Juan County money helped pay for the $4.6 million building, along with donations that the city started soliciting in 2008.

The new shelter has over 14,500 square feet of space and can hold 358 animals.

The old shelter's maximum was 146, but it had nearly 200 at times.
