FARMINGTON— In its season opener, the Aztec boys soccer team converted two late opportunities, scoring a pair of goals in the final 16 minutes to beat Miyamura 2-0 at Fred Cook Memorial Stadium Friday night.
"We tried to possess as much as possible and absorb their pressure," said Aztec coach Steve Scales. "We got to scout them a little earlier in the day, and we knew that if we could control the possession, we could break them down and get a couple opportunities late in the game, and we were able to."
After controlling the possession for the majority of the match, the Tigers finally broke through when center back Garrett Tucker jumped the passing lane, taking the ball the length of the field and sending the strike from the top right side of the 18-yard box for the goal.
Aztec put the game away eight minutes later when Bailey Watkins battled with Miyamura defenders in the box before finding an opening to put it in goal.
With the win, the Tigers advance to the tournament final, where they'll face the winner of today's 10 a.m. match between Bloomfield and Grants. The final is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m.
The Bosque Bobcats were simply too much for Piedra Vista, handing the Panthers a 5-0 loss in their season opener Friday afternoon at Weber Field in Albuquerque.
Bosque, who have reached the 3A/A State Championship game each of the past three seasons, took control of the match early, scoring four goals in the first half.
Bosque junior striker Roan Conley tallied four points in the match, scoring once and adding two assists for the Bobcats.
Also finding the net for Bosque were Dylan Chant, Sam Freed, Joseph Keller and Max Radaelli.
Tommy Miller, Chant and Freed each added an assist for the Bobcats while keeper Barrett Meigs recorded three saves.
The Panthers will be back on the pitch today, finishing their Albuquerque road trip with a match against Hope Christian scheduled for an 11 a.m. start.
