AZTEC — Rain and lightning hampered the opening day of the Lady Tiger Shootout girls soccer tournament on Friday.

Weather delays forced the postponement of the two winners bracket games until Saturday morning at the Aztec Tiger Sports Complex.

Despite the delays, Aztec, Piedra Vista and Kirtland Central's girls soccer teams all were able to get their first games under their belts with mixed results.

PV and KCHS met up in the consolation round after each dropped its opening contest, with the Lady Panthers emerging victorious 2-0.

Neither team could muster any offense in the first half as the former district rivals battled through a heavy downpour.

After the first half, play was halted for 30 minutes because of lightning.

PV (1-1) came out ready to strike as the Lady Panthers got goals from Marissa Greigo and Mia Eisenfeld early in the second half to get the win.

"It's good to get the first win," PV head coach Adam Huff said. "I told them 2-1 is a good weekend, so go out and get one tomorrow."

Each team dropped its opener in the tournament earlier in the day.

The Lady Panthers opened with a tough contest, falling to St. Pius X, last season's Class 4A state champs, 3-0.

The Lady Sartans (1-0) scored all three of their goals in the first half with Samantha Alfonso, Zahrah Gonzales and Tatiana Limon making it onto the score sheet.

PV was unable to get a shot off against the St. Pius defense in the loss. Pius attempted 40 shots, with 22 finding the target.

The Lady Sartans offensive barrage forced PV goalkeeper Sara Engert to make 19 saves in the defeat.

KCHS (0-2) struggled in a shootout loss to Aztec's junior varsity.

The Lady Tigers' JV scored early in the game before KCHS equalized just before halftime.

Neither team could find a go-ahead goal in the second half, and KCHS, which struggled in penalty kick situations and lost two district games on them a season ago, were unable to beat the JV squad.

"It's hard to find something positive with an 0-2 start," KCHS head coach Leonel Camacho said. "You have to dust yourself off and go on to the next match."

The Aztec varsity squad got its season off to a flying start with a 7-1 demolition of new District 1-5A opponent Miyamura.

The Lady Tigers (1-0) scored six goals in the first half on their way to the easy win. Hailey Morris led the way for Aztec with a couple goals.

Aztec was set to take on Los Lunas in a winner-bracket game Friday, but the weather delays forced the game to be moved to today.

St. Pius will match up with Aztec's JV in the other semifinal game.

The two semifinal winners will play at 2 p.m. in the championship game.

PV and KCHS will both play at 10 a.m. in the consolation round.

PV will face Miyamura and KCHS takes on Santa Fe Indian.
