AZTEC — Samantha Strauss will keep her athletic career going at the college level.
Strauss, who just completed her senior year at Aztec High, has committed to play volleyball for Bethel College in North Newton, Kan.
"I'm really excited, because not too many people get to have this experience," Strauss said of playing college sports.
Strauss, who plans to study nursing, said her main reason for attending the school was its nursing program and small class sizes.
"It has a really good nursing program, and it's really small, so I'll get a lot of hands-on experience," Strauss said.
Strauss played in the middle hitter and outside hitter roles for the Lady Tigers this past season, helping Aztec to a 14-9 record and a state tournament appearance.
She said she's willing to play in whatever spot the Thresher coaching staff believes will be the best fit for the team.
"I'm just ready to play, get out and meet people and travel," she said.
Strauss competed in both volleyball and track and field this past season for Aztec.
Anna Strauss, Samantha's mother and head coach of the Lady Tigers volleyball and track teams, said she's proud of the work her daughter put in during her time at Aztec and is glad to see her get rewarded.
"She's worked really hard to get to go on and continue to play," Anna Strauss said. "Not everybody gets to do that. It was a good fit, and it says a lot about her and the program. She's always been a good role model for the younger girls."
Samantha Strauss will join her brother, Hank, in playing college sports.
Hank Strauss plays linebacker for the Chadron State football team in Chadron, Neb.
Bethel College competes in the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference at the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics level.
The Threshers finished the volleyball season with a ninth-place finish in conference play and a 9-21 record overall.
