RIO RANCHO — The No. 3 Bloomfield softball team notched a pair of victories to set up a meeting in the winners' bracket of the 3A state tournament against No. 1 Silver.
The Lady Bobcats opened with a 12-6 win against No. 6 Raton and then beat No. 2 Portales 8-4 on Thursday in Rio Rancho.
"They just don't give up," Bloomfield head coach Andi Clark said of her team. "They're just all heart and leave it out on the field. This team just fights all the way through. It's what they do."
Clark was impressed by the way her offense clicked to start the tournament.
"Our bats are really sound right now," she said.
Bloomfield gets a crack at top-ranked Silver today at 11 a.m at Cleveland High School for a spot in the 3A championship game.
"They're a good team, but if we show up and field (the ball) and just play like we know how, then it will be a good game," Clark said.
Sandia Prep comes back to beat Bobcats
The Bloomfield baseball season came to an end with a loss to No. 2 Sandia Prep.
The Sundevils scored three runs in the top of the sixth inning to pull out a 5-3 win against the No. 7 Bobcats at Rio Rancho High School on Thursday.
A couple of mistakes early in the game cost the Bobcats as they slipped into a 2-0 hole after two innings.
"You take out first inning, where we missed a routine fly ball and second run on an error in the outfield, and it's a 3-3 game, and we're still playing," Bloomfield head coach Frank DeHoyos said.
Bloomfield battled back after the miscues with a three-run fourth inning to take a 3-2 lead.
"We took advantage of some walks, and Chris Garcia came up with the big hit to drive in two runs," DeHoyos said.
The Bobcats held the advantage until the sixth inning, when Sandia Prep came up with a double with a runner on second to tie the score.
Prep took the score to 5-3 later in the inning when runners scored from second and third base on a single to left field.
DeHoyos said he was happy with the way the team fought after the early errors put them in a deficit, but ultimately, the mistakes were the difference in the ball game.
