FARMINGTON — In the final tune-up before the district season, Farmington High outslugged Bloomfield.
The Lady Scorpions jumped out to a big lead on their way to a 15-11 win against the Lady Bobcats on Friday in Bloomfield.
"We came in aggressive and the focus was on staying strong the entire game," FHS head coach Johnny Curry said. "Even after Bloomfield made a game of it, we didn't back down."
FHS (9-11) opened a 14-4 lead thanks to a seven-run fifth inning. Jordan Curry hit a two-run home run in the inning.
Bloomfield (8-10) battled back, but couldn't overcome the deficit. Chelsea Runyon hit a grand slam in comeback attempt.
Despite the loss, Bloomfield head coach Andi Clark thought it was good for her team to face a strong opponent ahead of the district season.
"We're glad to have a tough game going into district," Clark said.
Bloomfield starts District 1-3A play on Tuesday at Thoreau. FHS begins District 1-4A play with Aztec on Friday.
PV sweeps 5A foes
Piedra Vista softball picked up a pair of key wins against 5A opposition.
The Lady Panthers (11-8) defeated Cibola 6-4 in eight innings and then beat La Cueva 10-3 on Friday in Albuquerque.
PV scored a pair of runs in the top of the eighth inning after a Cibola error to escape with the win.
"We battled against Cibola. It seems like they always had answer for us," PV head coach Kevin Werth said.
PV used a six-run first inning to cruise to an easy win against the Lady Bears in the second game.
"The bats really came alive early in game two," Werth said.
The Lady Panthers will play Valencia on Thursday before starting district play against Kirtland Central on Friday.
