FARMINGTON — The Piedra Vista baseball team opened its invitational tournament with a walk-off victory.
Zach Ahlgrim's RBI single drove home Matt Martin in the bottom of the seventh inning to give the Panthers a 4-3 win against Valencia on Thursday at Ricketts Park.
"I was looking for something down in the zone that I could hit," Ahlgrim said. "I knew they were throwing the curveball down, so that's what I was waiting for, and I got it."
With one out, Martin ripped a triple to right field to give Ahlgrim a chance to secure the victory.
Valencia head coach Carlos Carrasco was ejected following the triple after arguing that Martin had been tagged out at third base, but it appeared the PV shortstop slid under the tag and was safe on the play.
Gunner Archuleta pitched a complete game in the victory, allowing three runs and 10 hits in seven innings.
"Gunner wasn't his best today. He's been better, but he grinded through it," PV head coach Mike McGaha said. "His pitch count was low, because we made every defensive play behind him."
PV (6-3) opened the scoring in the bottom of the third inning when Kody Russell scored, following a Valencia throwing error to give the Panthers a 1-0 lead.
The Panthers tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning after RBI singles by Russell and Logan Klunder.
"In my opinion, Logan Klunder came up with the biggest hit in the game, because we absolutely needed to put a ball in play with a runner at third base," McGaha said.
The Jaguars (6-3) answered with a pair of runs in the top of the sixth thanks to RBI doubles by Daniel Barela and Anthony Gonzales.
Valencia loaded the bases in the top of the seventh with a pair of singles, and an error by Archuleta then tied the game at 3-3 following a fielder's choice.
The Panthers advance to face Los Alamos today at 4:30 p.m. after the Hilltoppers defeated Fruita Monument, Colo., 3-2. PV defeated Los Alamos twice to open its season.
