FARMINGTON — The Farmington High Boys and Girls tennis teams hit the road this weekend for a tournament in Carlsbad.

The FHS girls took first place, while the boys finished fourth at the Clair Higgins Invitational.

The Scorpions and Carlsbad High were the only two New Mexico teams, while the rest of the field was comprised of schools from Texas.

"It was good to play against people that you don't see over and over again in New Mexico," boys head coach Larry Larson said.

Sydney Schumacher, Allie Linville and Caysee Epaloose each won their singles brackets for the Lady Scorps.

Linville and Caroline Moss were victorious in the No. 2 doubles bracket, while Epaloose and Payton Sandavol won the tournament at No. 3 doubles.

"It was a very competitive tournament that put the girls in a lot of different pressure situations," girls head coach Pat McGrath said.

Andrews, Texas finished in second place behind the Lady Scorps.

Ned Merrion had the best result on the boys side, placing second at No. 4 singles.

Merrion and Cache Craig placed third in No. 3 doubles. Matt With and Conner Rasmussen also took third place at No. 2 doubles.

Franklin High from El Paso, Texas won the boys tournament and swept all nine titles.

The teams will continue their seasons at the Roswell Invitational next weekend.

"We will see most of the better southern 4A schools," McGrath said of the event.
