Farmington — The Shiprock boys basketball team took to the road and returned with the District 1-3A tournament championship.

The Chieftains dominated Wingate 85-58 on Saturday at the Bear Den in Fort Wingate to come out with the title.

"We just got on a roll and rode that wave," Shiprock head coach Chester H. Atcitty said.

Shiprock's two senior leaders, Justin Begay and Hiram Gleason, caught fire in the contest and nearly outscored the Bears on their own, combining for 57 points.

"It's always a positive to get those two to play like that," Atcitty said. "The other guys did well, too, focusing on their defensive assignments."

Darryle Nelson Jr. added 11 points for Shiprock in the win.

Atcitty said the second-half defense was what allowed the Chieftains to pull away from the Bears.

"We made defensive adjustments, and they were so flustered that they had a hard time even getting into their offense," he said.

The Chieftains and Bears split their four games this season.

Shiprock and Wingate will both make the 3A state playoffs and will find out their seeding today.

"I'm shooting for a six or seven (seed). That would be nice," Atcitty said. "It's really hard to tell, though, when it comes to the committee."
