FARMINGTON — The Bloomfield Bobcats wrestling squad crossed a couple of goals off its to-do list with a dominant performance on Friday at the Chieftain Pit in Shiprock.
The Bobcats won the Distict 1/5 3A/A title and qualified all 14 wrestlers for the 3A/A state championships.
Bloomfield won individual titles in 10 of the 14 weight classes, finishing with a team score of 250 to claim the team championship ahead of St. Michael's, which placed second with a team score of 177.
"We've started to peak, and, hopefully, we can finish it up next week," Bloomfield head coach Greg Shoemaker said.
Corbin Nelson (106), Levi Whitley (113), Rudy Vigil (120), Gage Krielick (126), Jacob Spencer (138), Troy Rightmire (145), Alex Portillo (152), Paul Jaramillo (195), David DeHerrera (220) and Lorenzo LaMere (285) claimed individual titles for the Bobcats, while St. Mike's won the other four individual titles.
Coming into the year, Shoemaker wanted to get all his varsity wrestlers qualified for the state meet. After accomplishing that goal at district, he credited the wrestlers and his staff for the effort they put into the season.
"The kids and staff worked hard, and we got a lot of help from volunteers," Shoemaker said.
Shiprock placed third as a team behind the Bobcats and the Horsemen with a score of 101.
The Chieftains qualified 11 wrestlers for the state meet, with four finishing in second place, four placing third and three more coming in fourth.
Wingate placed fourth as a team with 53 points. Newcomb took fifth, and Foothills came in sixth.
Shoemaker was named the District Coach of the Year for Bloomfield.
Geno Palermo and Korey Windham of St. Mike's earned the MVP awards for the lower and upper weight classes.
The Bobcats will turn their attention to the 3A/A State Championship next weekend in Rio Rancho with the hopes of earning a few individual state championship and fighting a tough Cobre squad for the team title.
"Cobre is tough. They're definitely the team to beat," Shoemaker said. "Robertson also has a good squad. Silver is always tough. It's pretty balanced out and feels like there are about six teams who wrestle well. It's going to take a team effort from us."Joshua Perry can be reached at firstname.lastname@example.org; 505-564-4577. Follow him on Twitter @jperrysuu.
