FARMINGTON — About a month into the high school swimming season, both Farmington High and Piedra Vista have made strides toward earning state qualifying times.

"Everything's going pretty good," said FHS head coach Mike Ortiz. "The seniors will be good, and we have some good up and coming swimmers that we'll be able to develop."

The two schools competed against each other in the Cross Town Splash Down on Saturday at the Farmington Aquatic Center and Ortiz liked what he saw from his younger swimmers.

"The underclassmen had a good meet," he said. "It was really good to see them swim well while in competition. The upperclassmen are still working toward getting their times down to where we wanted them later in the year."

In the meet, the PV girls finished with 144 point to 125 for FHS.

The Scorpion boys totalled 118 points to 84 for PV.

Ortiz is hoping a more difficult practice schedule yields lower times as the season progresses.

"We're going to have some harder and harder practices," Ortiz said. "I can see this team is going to be a good team. It's just a matter of getting them accustomed to the competition. They want to race each other and they want to get better."

Both teams are off during the holiday break and will return to competition on Jan. 11 at the Taos Tiger Invitational.

PV head coach Karen McCay was unable to be reached for comment by press time.
