FARMINGTON — In a tight game that went down the wire, the Shiprock girls basketball team came out victorious in its season opener.
The Lady Chieftains defeated Gallup 68-66 on the road Saturday night.
Shiprock (1-0) got off to a slow start, falling behind 10-4 after the first quarter.
The Lady Chiefs responded in the second quarter, ending the half on a 13-5 run to tie the game at 26 heading into the locker room.
Neither team really gained any momentum in the third quarter as the Lady Chiefs took a one-point lead into the fourth 42-41.
Shiprock started the fourth strong, opening up a 56-49 lead with a 7-0 run early in the quarter.
The Lady Chiefs held off a comeback attempt from the Lady Bengals (0-1) by hitting key free throws, emerging with the two-point victory.
Shania Harry led a balanced Shiprock scoring attack with 16 points, while Arantxa Curley (13), Courtney Steele (11) and Taylor Henderson (10) all scored in double figures.
Niasia McIntosh led Gallup with a game-high 19 points.
Shiprock will be off until Dec. 3 when the team will take on Kirtland Central.
Shiprock head coach Larenson Henderson could not be reached for comment by press time.
Piedra Vista, Pojoaque Valley PPD
The girls basketball game between Piedra Vista and Pojoaque Valley scheduled for Saturday in Farmington was postponed due to snowy road conditions.
A make up date has yet to be determined.
