FARMINGTON  Piedra Vista's girls' soccer team is undergoing a mid-season coaching change.

After 10 games this season, Shaun Taylor has resigned as head coach of the Lady Panthers, said PV athletic director Kelly Thur.

"A change in the middle of the season can be detrimental, but, at the same time, the positive aspect is that maybe it can result in a rejuvenated spirit," Thur said. "It depends situation to situation. The girls on the team have a very strong character, and they can use this as an opportunity to grow."

Assistant coaches Ryan Mussett and Alyse Spencer will co-coach the varsity squad for the remainder of the season.

Taylor declined to comment on the details of his resignation. But he said his two former assistants will do well leading the team for the remaining 10 games on the regular season schedule and beyond.

"Ryan and Alyse have the ability to lead the team to a good showing in district and into the playoffs," Taylor said.

Mussett has been involved with the PV team as an assistant for several years Spencer is in her second year on the coaching staff. Both are former PV soccer players.

"Between the two of them, the girls in the program feel like they can discuss anything with either one of them," Thur said. "There is camaraderie between them and mutual respect."

PV has gone 6-4 through its first 10 games this year.

Taylor was an assistant coach under Errol Baade and took over the team as head coach before the 2011 season. Taylor amassed a record of 38-21-1 in his two-and-half seasons coaching the Lady Panthers. PV made the state tournament in each full season Taylor coached, falling 1-0 to Los Alamos in the second round of the tournament each time.
