After starting the season on a losing streak, Aztec has evened its record with a two-game winning streak.
The Tigers (2-2) defeated Miyamura (0-4) 49-27 on the road Friday night in Gallup.
It took Aztec just two plays to score as junior quarterback Marcus Crawford found Josh Harris on a 67-yard touchdown pass. It was one of four touchdown passes from Crawford to Harris in the game. Crawford threw for all seven of Aztec's touchdowns as he also found Ryneal Lewis-Adams for two scores and Noah Frohn for one.
“It was nice to see us get off the ground as early as we did,” said Aztec head coach Matt Steinfeldt. “The passing attack continued to develop, and that helps take attention off of Ryneal.”
Lewis-Adams had two touchdowns in the game, including a 63-yard screen pass from Crawford that scored Aztec's second touchdown of the game in the first quarter.
The Tigers took a 28-10 lead into halftime and scored quickly in the third quarter to go up 35-10. Several reserve players saw time in the fourth quarter.
Crawford finished the game with seven touchdown passes and no interceptions.
“Our thought process has been to identify someone who would compliment our running game. Marcus is performing well, and Josh Harris has been able to make big plays over the last couple of games,” Steinfeldt said.
Harris has eight touchdowns in the last two games.
Aztec will return home for just the second time this season when it hosts 5A Manzano next Friday on homecoming night. Manzano is 3-0 and will face Mayfield High at home on Saturday. The Monarchs are ranked No. 5 in 5A while Aztec was ranked No. 6 in 4A going into Friday. Last year, Manzano beat Aztec 47-20 in Albuquerque.
“We know, especially from last year's experience with Manzano, they are a very good football team. This year, they may have developed into an even better team than last year,” Steinfeldt said. “But, with two road wins, we have developed some confidence that we will take into that game.”John Livingston can be reached at email@example.com; 505-564-4648.
