FARMINGTON - Even though it's his first head coaching job, Danny Secrest is a face many Farmington High fans are familiar with.
Secrest has been hired as the Lady Scorpions' new girls' basketball coach, replacing Michael Switch after three seasons.
"I was excited. I was hoping I'd get it and here it is," Secrest said.
Secrest has been an assistant coach at FHS for nearly two decades with 13 years experience in boys' basketball and 17 years in baseball.
"I do bleed green and appreciate this school," he said.
Farmington athletic director Don Lorett said Secrest's understanding of Farmington High athletics was an important factor in him earning the job.
"He's been an assistant under some good coaches, and he has a positive approach to coaching," Lorett said.
Secrest has served under previous Scorpion coaches such as Marv Sanders, Kevin Holman, Robert Lopez and Paul Corley. He said the experience he gained with them will go a long way.
"The guys that I've coached under have been fantastic, and it's great that I've got experience from them," he said. "Just learning from them and gaining expertise from them."
Secrest replaces Switch after Switch compiled a 22-54 record in three years with the team.
Last season was tough on the Lady Scorps as they finished just 3-20 with a roster that had only two seniors.
Lorett believes Secrest will be able to bring more consisitency to the program.
"We have to get our numbers up for him to have more than one quality year, but he's ready to jump right in and understands the concept of Scorpion athletics," Lorett said. "He's an alumni, and he's been a successful athlete and assistant, so it's nice for him to get a head coaching job."
Secrest expects to see quite a bit of improvement in the team that returns the vast majority of its players.
"It's just a matter of putting in the work," he said. "It's good to have a younger core, but, hopefully, there are some older girls who come out and contribute as well."Joshua Perry can be reached at email@example.com; 505-564-4648. Follow him on Twitter @jperrysuu.
