Johns and assistant coach Earl Johnson will not be allowed to coach against Farmington or Piedra Vista after the program violated an NMAA bylaw.
Johnson filmed last week's FHS-PV game at Jerry A. Conner Fieldhouse, which violates Section 7, Rule 8B of the NMAA handbook.
The rule, which pertains to regular season contests, reads, "Radio broadcasting, video recording, or telecasting a regular season contest is prohibited without the consent of the host school."
There are exceptions for the visiting school and media representatives, but the Chieftains were not involved in the game.
"Basically we reported it to the NMAA, and the NMAA decided what the sanctions were gonna be," Piedra Vista athletic director Kelly Thur said.
Johns could not be reached for comment.
Shiprock athletic director Mike Walker confirmed the four-game suspension, which does not extend to the district or state tournaments.
Walker stressed that Johns didn't do any filming.
"He never attended the game. It was the assistant that did the filming," he said.
Walker and Thur declined further comment.
The Chieftains (13-6, 0-1 District 1-4A) lost to Kirtland Central, 59-50, on Friday with Johns coaching.
Shiprock will play PV on Tuesday at The Chieftain Pit.
Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
The JV and C team coaches are expected to handle the game for SHS.
