FARMINGTON — A 34-year-old Crownpoint man pleaded guilty Wednesday to abusive sexual contact after he was accused in November 2012 of sexually assaulting an 11-year-old child.
Under the terms of the plea agreement, Elbanal Al Johnson will be sentenced to 10 years in federal prison, followed by a term of supervised release to be determined by the court, according to a press release from the U.S. Department of Justice.
The release states the child was in Johnson's care in Crownpoint when the crime was committed. Johnson admitted in the agreement that he abused the child on Nov. 5, 2012.
Johnson is being held in federal custody and will remain in custody pending a sentencing hearing. A hearing date has not yet been set.
The release states the case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched in May 2006 by the Department of Justice to combat child sexual exploitation and abuse.
